Google Phone Is Real - Coming In January 2010Views: 1017

I posted on Twitter that I was not sure whether news of there even being a Google Phone was real. Well, in response to that tweet, I was referred to a Techcrunch page. According to that page, the Google Phone is real - better than an iPhone, maybe even a Verizon Droid. Want to see for yourself and share what you think? Visit Google Phone.

Despite all the buzz about the Google Phone, I think I am going to stick with my Nokia N810. However, I may end up putting the Android OS on it. After all, it's a free Open Source download. If it makes my Nokia N810 more competitive and useful in the marketplace, why not upgrade to the Android OS?

Some features are usually controled by the carrier, who subsidize the cost of the phone.

The phone is made by HTC.

I am waiting for the ASUS phone running Android.

The phone, manufactured by HTC, has a number of code names such as HTC Passion, Dream or Nexus One and could be available directly though the Google website as early as January 5, according to the source.

Google said on its official blog on Saturday that it was testing a new mobile device with its employees. Media reports have said that Google will sell an unlocked version of the touch screen phone, allowing consumers to pick a carrier of their choice to provide wireless service.

Another version will be linked to Deutsche Telekom's T-Mobile USA, which will subsidize the cost of the phone for U.S. consumers who agree to a service contract, the source said. Pricing details were not available.

"In the long term Google will become a seller and get commission from operators," the source said, adding that other operators are expected to follow T-Mobile's lead eventually and agree to Google's terms.

The phone is similar to Apple Inc's iPhone but has, among other features, an exchangeable battery, a somewhat larger screen and the ability for consumers to add a memory card to the device. Any operator who wants to make the phone available to its customers will have to go through Google, the source said.

"Apple had a phone so hot it changed the business model and got operators to agree to revenue sharing. This is going to change the business too," the person added.

A T-Mobile representative said the company does not comment on rumors or speculation.

A Google representative would not comment beyond the blog post on Saturday, which said that Google employees were testing an Android-based device to "experiment with new mobile features and capabilities."

Baird Research analyst Will Power said: "We expect the launch of a new competitive device to be directionally negative for most of the existing smart phone markers, including Apple, Research in Motion, Nokia Oyg, HTC, Motorola Inc, Palm Inc, Samsung and others, while perhaps most negative for the existing Android partners."

Until now, Google has partnered with many handset makers by offering its open-source Android software as a freely available operating system for smart phones.

As of last month, Google said that more than a dozen phones were available with Android, including the heavily promoted Motorola Droid phone that is available with Verizon Wireless, a unit of Verizon Communications and Vodafone.

Question - What can the Google Phone do that a Nokia N810 Internet Tablet running the Android OS cannot do? From my perspective, the only thing that separates one from the other is that nasty cell phone contract. Why pay into a cell phone contract when all you really need is to be in a Wi-Fi hot spot with a Skype-in number on a Nokia N810?

Lamar,
Most people actually move around. Many people drive their cars. Looking for free wiFi spot sounds like a plan for those who can not afford to pay for a cell phone contract.

Have you used your Nokia to conduct Skype calls?
What do you do if you are not around a WiFi spot?

Scott,

I use my Nokia N810 to make Skype calls all the time. Since I have a Skype-in number, I can call any phone anywhere in the U.S. and Canada absolutely free. No cell phone contract with rollover minutes or anything like that. I talk as little or as long as I want. Now, if I am not in a Wi-Fi hot spot, I am obviously not going to be making any calls or retrieving voicemail or email. But, I am not missing anything either. You see, like Poken, Skype works in a cloud, too. My Skype account exists in cyberspace - not in my computer. For that reason, I can access my Skype account from any online computer using a flash drive with Skype on it.

You should put SkypeLite on your Droid phone, add a Skype-in number and use it when you happen to have Wi-Fi access. No doubt, there are a lot of Wi-Fi hot spots in NYC. Where you have good restaurants you are bound to have lost of FREE Wi-Fi hot spots - especially in NYC. In fact, it would not surprise me in the least to learn there are more FREE Wi-Fi hot spots in NYC than any other city in the world. Now, I do not know that to be the case. But, I would not be least bit surprised to learn that it was the case.

Good restaurants do not have WiFi. Cafes and other informal places may have WiFi, but it is not that popular. I will get a list if you want.

There are not enough WiFi spots to cover where I go, perhaps you do not go anywhere.

Do you leave town at all?
I have Skypelite but it does not have Skype voice. But what does it matter?
I am not going to stop, find a WiFi network, sign on, and then use Skype when I could have already called the person.

Scott,

Skypelite does not have voice? What do you do with it - just text chat? If you cannot make phone calls with it, why bother with it at all?

I use it for chat, my clients taht need support juts text me. My phone plan is affordable and gives me the minutes I need.

I pay about $125 a month after taxes. That is very reasonable and for a business, well within my budget.

I do not have a paid Skype account.
