Mom's new HDTV is not in HD |

Mom got a new Samsung LED HDTV and she tells me that Time-Warner wants to sell her a High Def converter box so that she gets the 1080p quality on her new set. There is a one-time charge for the box then a monthly fee subscription that doubles her current monthly subscription.
What is that box, all I see are DTV converter boxes for old CRT type sets with an analog tuner.
Can that box be bought outright and without subscription fees in the future?
I think without the HD convert box she will only get 480i resolution.
Frankly, I'm surprised since I get 1080i HD resolution with a roof antenna with my Sony LED HDTV and the pictures look suburb. I have a BD and the quality is also very very HD, I can live with the 1080i source for free.
